Litchfield is a city in Hillsdale County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,458.
The city is situated within Litchfield Township, but is politically independent.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²). 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. Litchfield also has the St. Joseph River flowing close to the down town area, within the city limits. Litchfield has a growing industrial base and is centrally located in Southern Mid-Michigan. Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,458 people, 568 households, and 362 families residing in the city. The population density is 235.5/km² (608.9/mi²). There are 604 housing units at an average density of 97.6/km² (252.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.42% White, 0.21% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 1.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 568 households out of which 34.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $39,292, and the median income for a family is $47,500. Males have a median income of $34,464 versus $24,671 for females.
