Malawi has a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties, with extreme difficulty for anybody to achieve electoral success under the banner of any other party.

- Democratic Progressive Party — ruling party
- Malawi Congress Party — main party in the central region populated by ethnic Chewa

- National Democratic Alliance
- United Democratic Front — main party in the southern region populated by ethnic Yao
