Limerick Township is a township located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 13,534. The township was created in the 1720s - early records do not survive to tell the exact date, although it is mentioned in early Philadelphia records as early as 1726. Royersford, Pennsylvania was created from its southeastern corner in 1879. Limerick Township is a member of the Spring-Ford Area School District.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 59.0 km² (22.8 mi²). 58.5 km² (22.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.92% water. The Limerick nuclear power plant is located within its borders.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,534 people, 5,143 households, and 3,744 families residing in the township. The population density is 231.5/km² (599.6/mi²). There are 5,442 housing units at an average density of 93.1/km² (241.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 95.10% White, 2.11% African American, 0.19% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,143 households out of which 37.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% are non-families. 21.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.09.
In the township the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 40.2% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.0 males.
