Lima (town), New York

Lima is a town located in Livingston County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,541.

The Town of Lima is in the northeast part of the county. The Village of Lima is located within the town.

History

The Town of Lima was organized in 1797 as the Town of Charleston, but was renamed in 1808 to reflect that many residents had come from Old Lyme, Connecticut and to avoid confusion with another location named Charleston in New York state.

Geography

The north town line is the border of Monroe County, New York, and the east town line is the border of Ontario County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 82.7 km² (31.9 mi²). 82.6 km² (31.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,541 people, 1,553 households, and 1,102 families residing in the town. The population density is 55.0/km² (142.4/mi²). There are 1,610 housing units at an average density of 19.5/km² (50.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.87% White, 1.04% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 1.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,553 households out of which 35.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 13.2% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $48,774, and the median income for a family is $57,127. Males have a median income of $40,607 versus $26,316 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,972. 4.5% of the population and 2.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.0% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
