Levan Chilashvili

Levan Chilashvili (August 17, 1930-April 26, 2004) was a famous Georgian archaeologist and historian, Academician of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (GAS), Meritorious Scholar of Georgia, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor.
In 1954 he graduated from the Faculty of History of the Tbilisi State University (TSU). Since 1967 he is a Professor of this University. In 1958 Chilashvili received a PhD degree in History, in 1967 a degree of the Doctor of Historical Sciences.
In 1991 he was elected as Academician of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (GAS).
Chilashvili was a Director of the State Museum of Georgia of the GAS (1980-2004).
In 1982 he was awarded the Simon Janashia Prize of the GAS.
Main fields of scientific activity of Levan Chilashvili were: archaeology and history of ancient Georgia. In 1995-2003 by the Chilashvili's archaeological expedition in Nekresi (Kakheti region of Eastern Georgia) were found old, pre-Christian Georgian inscriptions of the 1st-3rd centuries AD.
