Leo Penn (August 27, 1921 – September 5, 1998) was an American actor and Emmy Award-winning director of such popular television shows as "St. Elsewhere", "Kojak" and "Trapper John, M.D.". He was married to Eileen Ryan, and is the father of singer Michael Penn and actors Sean Penn and Chris Penn.
Nowadays, 50 years later, Leo Penn is most famous for having been convicted as part of Joseph McCarthy's inquiries. Leo Penn refused to cooperate with congress by turning over names of active communists he was familiar with, and for this has become a folk hero in some circles. At the same time, his name is synonymous with the bredth and influence of Soviet espionage in 1950s Hollywood.
