Leland Township, Michigan

Leland Township is a township in Leelanau County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the early 2000s, it is the county seat of Leelanau County6. However, county voters on August 3, 2004, approved a proposal to build a new governmental center in adjacent Suttons Bay Township. As of the 2000 census, Leland Township had a total population of 2,033.

Communities
- Leland is the county seat and an unincorporated community within the township, situated on Michigan State Highway 22 at Template:Coor dms. Leland has ferry service to both North and South Manitou Island.
- Lake Leelanau is an unincorporated community situated at a point where Lake Leelanau on the Leland River narrows. Michigan State Highway 204 crosses here, on the only bridge across the river south of Leland. The community is at Template:Coor dms. The FIPS place code is 44760. The elevation is 607 feet above sea level.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 379.4 km² (146.5 mi²). 118.1 km² (45.6 mi²) of it is land and 261.3 km² (100.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 68.87% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,033 people, 818 households, and 589 families residing in the township. The population density is 17.2/km² (44.6/mi²). There are 1,550 housing units at an average density of 13.1/km² (34.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 93.90% White, 0.69% African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 3.49% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 6.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 818 households out of which 24.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.9% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.9% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.81.
In the township the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 21.5% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 21.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.9 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $46,629, and the median income for a family is $55,714. Males have a median income of $32,206 versus $24,231 for females. The per capita income for the township is $27,556. 3.2% of the population and 1.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.7% of those under the age of 18 and 2.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
