Leicester (village), New York

Leicester is a village located in Livingston County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 469. The Village is named after Leicester Phelps, an early inhabitant.

The Village of Leicester is located inside the Town of Leicester on US Route 20A and Route 36.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 km² (0.4 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

The village is north of Letchworth State Park.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 469 people, 175 households, and 130 families residing in the village. The population density is 503.0/km² (1,317.8/mi²). There are 186 housing units at an average density of 199.5/km² (522.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.74% White, 0.43% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.49% from other races, and 2.13% from two or more races. 2.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 175 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% are non-families. 21.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the village the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 107.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 110.0 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $43,750, and the median income for a family is $55,357. Males have a median income of $33,750 versus $27,386 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,752. 13.1% of the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.5% of those under the age of 18 and 6.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
