Lancaster is a city located in Lancaster County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,177. It is the county seat of Lancaster CountyTemplate:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.3 km² (5.9 mi²). 15.0 km² (5.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.36% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,177 people, 3,396 households, and 2,115 families residing in the city. The population density is 543.4/km² (1,406.2/mi²). There are 3,778 housing units at an average density of 251.1/km² (649.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 47.54% White, 49.49% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.88% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.15% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 2.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,396 households out of which 27.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.5% are married couples living together, 22.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% are non-families. 33.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 3.01.
