Lancashire County Cricket Club

Lancashire County Cricket Club is a first-class cricket club based at Old Trafford cricket ground, Manchester.

After finding success elusive in the County Championship since in the Second World War, despite producing players of the quality of Brian Statham, Fred Trueman's long time opening partner for England, and legendary opener Cyril Washbrook, Lancashire took the opportunity to dominate the new world of one day cricket in the 1970s. Making full use of overseas stars such as Farooq Engineer and the explosive West Indian batting great Clive Lloyd, captain Jackie Bond won a succession of one day crowns in the company of David Lloyd, Barry Wood, Frank Hayes and 'Flat Jack' Simmons.

Impish middle order batsman Neil Fairbrother, Pakistani great Wasim Akram and no nonsense seamers such as Paul Allott and Peter Martin continued to bring success Lancashire's way, while long time England captain Mike Atherton has been replaced as Lancashire's biggest contemporary star with the emergence of the mighty Andy Flintoff, the only 'new' Ian Botham to be worthy of the name.

Lancashire's failure to win the County Championship outright since the war still rankles with their passionate supporters, and modern Roses matches perhaps lack the epic quality of earlier days, but Lancashire remain among the favourites for any one day competition and the strong leagues of the 'Red Rose' county remain a fertile breeding ground for young talent in the game.
