Lakeview is a town located in Lake County, Oregon. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,474. It is the county seat of Lake CountyTemplate:GR.

Lakeview is located at 42°11'20" North, 120°21'0" West (42.188904, -120.350121)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.0 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.64% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,474 people, 1,037 households, and 695 families residing in the town. The population density is 612.3/km² (1,582.7/mi²). There are 1,220 housing units at an average density of 302.0/km² (780.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.47% White, 0.04% African American, 2.47% Native American, 0.93% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 3.07% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. 5.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,037 households out of which 29.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% are non-families. 30.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $30,960, and the median income for a family is $38,953. Males have a median income of $31,958 versus $22,198 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,649. 15.3% of the population and 14.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.1% of those under the age of 18 and 13.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

Lakeview is the site of the only fatal casualties of World War II in the mainland United States due to enemy attack. On May 5, 1945, a Japanese Balloon Bomb exploded, killing five children and the wife of a local clergyman. Killed in the attack were: Sherman Shoemaker, 12; Jay Gifford, 12; Edward Engen, 13; Joan Patzke, 11; Richard Patzke, 13; and Mrs. Elsie Mitchell, 26.
