Lake Linden is a village in Houghton County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,081. The village is mostly within Schoolcraft Township, though a tiny portion lies in Torch Lake Township.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²). 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 14.29% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,081 people, 485 households, and 307 families residing in the village. The population density is 632.4/km² (1,646.8/mi²). There are 569 housing units at an average density of 332.9/km² (866.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.41% White, 0.09% African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 485 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 34.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.84.
In the village the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.4 males.
The median income for a household in the village is $24,234, and the median income for a family is $30,000. Males have a median income of $29,327 versus $18,654 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,189. 17.8% of the population and 16.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.1% of those under the age of 18 and 20.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
