La Aurora International Airport
|
La Aurora International Airport (IATA airport code GUA) serves Guatemala City, Guatemala and is located 6km south of Guatemala City's centre. It is administered by the Direccion General de Aeronautica Civil
The runway at the airport is 9800 feet long, and, unlike most airports in the country, is paved.
The departure tax is US$30, which is included in airfare.
In the 1990s, the strain placed on La Aurora was greater than the airport's infrastructure was designed to handle. As a result, the airport is often overcrowded at peak periods. To combat this, the Guatemalan government has announced plans to build a new airport 60km south of La Aurora.
This new airport will take most of the international flights both into and out of Guatemala, leaving La Aurora to be used for domestic flights and flights to neighbouring countries. The proposed airport will be connected to La Aurora by a high-speed rail network.
