Kyungpook National University

Template:Infobox Korean university Kyungpook National University (KNU) is a large public university in Daegu, South Korea. Its name refers to Gyeongbuk province, of which Daegu is the capital.

The primary aims of the University are to offer education for those who desire to make significant contributions to society, provide them with knowledge in their major fields, and encourage them in independent thinking and research. The University also seeks to nurture in all students a deeper understanding of humanity and nature, a broader perspective regarding social phenomena, and a creative and imaginative outlook on life.

The University has 13 colleges and 9 graduate schools. To foster an educational and research environment, the University also supports 20 auxiliary educational facilities and 54 research institutes.


Contents

Campus

The university is located in the northeastern section of Daegu, Korea. The spacious campus is spread out across a hill, overlooking the city. All departments are located on the main campus, except for the College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, University Hospital, and attached Elementary, Middle, and High Schools, all of which are located downtown. Transportation to the main campus is very convenient using main city bus lines and can be reached within 15 minutes from the city center.

Brief history

  • 1940s: National College established in 1946 along with College of Education, College of Medicine, and College of Agriculture.
  • 1950s: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and College of Law and Political Science established, and name changed to Kyungpook National University (KNU) in 1951. Dr. Ko, Byung-Gan assumed office as first President of KNU (1952) and Graduate School established in 1953.
  • 1960s: Main administration building built in 1960 and Graduate School of Education established in 1969.
  • 1970s: College of Engineering (1970), College of Economics and Commerce (1972), and College of Dentistry (1973) established. First overseas academic cooperative relationship initiated with State University of New York at Buffalo, USA, in 1973.
  • 1980s: Graduate School of Public Administration (1980), Graduate School of Business Administration (1981), Graduate School of Public Health (1981), College of Music & Visual Arts (1982), Graduate School of Industry (1985), and College of Veterinary Medicine (1988) established. College of Liberal Arts and Sciences divided into College of Humanities and Social Sciences and College of Natural Sciences (1981). College of Humanities and Social Sciences divided into College of Humanities and College of Social Sciences (1982). College of Law and Political Science renamed as College of Law (1982).
  • 1990s: Graduate School of Agricultural Development, College of Human Ecology (1992), Graduate School of International Studies (1996), and Graduate School of Policy and Information (1999) established. Current President, Dr. Park, Chan Suk, took office as 13th & 14th President of KNU (1994).
