Kusel (district)

Template:Infobox German district noregbez Kusel is a district (Kreis) in the south of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from north-west clockwise) Birkenfeld, Bad Kreuznach, Donnersbergkreis, Kaiserslautern, Saarpfalz and Sankt Wendel, the latter two belonging to the state of Saarland.

History
The district was Kusel was created at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1939 it was renamed to Landkreis Kusel. At the communal reform of 1969/72 the boundary were slightly changed, as some parts of the district Birkenfeld were added to the district.
Geography
The district is located in the North Palatian Hills (Nordpfälzer Bergland), to the north of the industrial areas of Saarland. Largest rivers are Lauter and Glan.
Coat of arms
The coat of arms displays two lions. The blue lion is the heraldic animal of the Counts of Veldenz. The yellow lion is the lion of Palatinate, that acquired the area in the 15th century. |
