Kovas

The word Kovas has several meanings:
- (In mythology) Kovas is a name of a masculine deity in Lithuanian mythology. Based on very limited sources, some mythologists have construed him to be a god of war, identical to the Prussian god Pikuls. According to this reconstruction, worshippers of Kovas would sacrifice black horses to him. The sacred bird of Kovas is the rook or crow. The word kovas or kovarnis also means 'a rook.'
- Kovas corresponds to the month of March in Lithuanian. Other months are named for birds: balandis stands for both April and pigeon, and gegužė means May and cuckoo in Lithuanian. In this case interpreting Kovas as a name of a deity may be misleading, based on analogy with Latin Mars god and month.
