Kosovo District or Kosovski okrug on Serbian
It includes the municipalities of:
It has a population of 672,292. Seat of the District is in Priština.
Priština is the town with a striking contrast between the old and modern times. The immediate vicinity of Pristina is the site of a settlement from the Neolite period, as well as of the Roman settlement, Vicianum. In the center of Pristina stands the Carsi, i.e. Tas - mosque, built after the Battle of Kosovo, in 1389.
Near to Pristina is also the Gracanica Monastery, the last endowment of the Serbian King Milutin, built in 1315. By its architecture and fresco painting, Gracanica is one of the most significant medieval monuments in the entire Europe, and reference to it is made in all the anthologies of the European building. Today it is a female Orthodox monastery, open to visitors.
Ore resources and mining play an important part within the economy of this region. By the volume and quality of its lead-zink ore deposits, the Kosovo District ranks among the richest one not only in Serbia, but in the entire Europe, as well.
