Klukwan is a census-designated place located in Skagway-Hoonah-Angoon Census Area, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the CDP is 139.

Geography
Klukwan is located at 59°24'0" North, 135°53'36" West (59.400098, -135.893393)Template:GR. Klukwan is located 35 km (22 miles) nortwest of Haines, on the Chilkat River near the Haines Highway.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²). 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 34.21% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 139 people, 44 households, and 31 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 43.3/km² (111.9/mi²). There are 85 housing units at an average density of 26.5/km² (68.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 10.07% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 88.49% Native American, 0.72% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 3.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 44 households out of which 54.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% are married couples living together, 15.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.16 and the average family size is 3.75.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 33.1% under the age of 18, 13.7% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 6.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 104.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 121.4 males.

History
Klukwan began as a Chilkat Tingit village along the trade route later known as the Dalton Trail. In 1880, the U. S. Navy reported the name of the village as "Chilcat of Klukquan." Klukwan is said to mean "the old town." Klukwan is the only remaining of five Chilkat villages that were in the area before 1900.
