Kirkwood is a town located in Broome County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,651.
The Town of Kirkwood is in the south-central part of the county.

History
In 1789 Jonathan Fitch built a gristmill here, becoming the first pioneer settler. The Town of Kirkwood was formed from the Town of Conklin in 1859.
Geography
The Susquehanna River forms the western border. US Route 11 and Interstate Highway 81 pass through the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 81.3 km² (31.4 mi²). 80.2 km² (31.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.37% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,651 people, 2,247 households, and 1,611 families residing in the town. The population density is 70.5/km² (182.5/mi²). There are 2,469 housing units at an average density of 30.8/km² (79.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.75% White, 0.60% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 0.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,247 households out of which 31.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% are non-families. 22.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.92.
In the town the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 99.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $38,279, and the median income for a family is $45,993. Males have a median income of $34,543 versus $23,275 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,228. 5.9% of the population and 4.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
