King George's War
|
King George's War is the name given to the military operations in North America that formed part of the 1740-1748 War of the Austrian Succession. It was one of the French and Indian Wars. In the course of the war British colonial forces captured the French stronghold of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, but this gain was returned to France under the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. King George's War did nothing to stop the showdown between Britain and France. Austria shifted its allegiance from Britain to France, as Britain became allies with Prussia and the conflict continued. This would lead to the Seven Years War, and the French and Indian War in North America.
