Key Largo, Florida

Key Largo is a census-designated place and town located in Monroe County, Florida, located on an island of the same name in the upper Florida Keys. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 11,886. The name comes from the Spanish Cayo Largo, or "long island". It is the first island of the Florida Keys and the originating point of the Overseas Highway to Key West.

The film, Key Largo (1948), starring Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart was set there.

Key Largo is located at 25°6'24" North, 80°25'48" West (25.106637, -80.429917)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 39.6 km² (15.3 mi²). 31.5 km² (12.1 mi²) of it is land and 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 20.54% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 11,886 people, 5,245 households, and 3,288 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 377.7/km² (978.1/mi²). There are 8,043 housing units at an average density of 255.6/km² (661.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 94.38% White, 2.04% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. 16.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,245 households out of which 23.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% are non-families. 27.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.75.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 30.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 107.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $42,577, and the median income for a family is $50,755. Males have a median income of $33,588 versus $25,468 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $25,441. 8.3% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
