Kernersville is a town located in Forsyth County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 17,126.

Kernersville is located at 36°6'58" North, 80°4'55" West (36.116240, -80.081963)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 31.5 km² (12.2 mi²). 31.3 km² (12.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.58% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 17,126 people, 7,286 households, and 4,663 families residing in the town. The population density is 546.5/km² (1,415.7/mi²). There are 7,950 housing units at an average density of 253.7/km² (657.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 84.11% White, 8.74% African American, 0.32% Native American, 1.26% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 4.33% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 7.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,286 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 33.8% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $41,520, and the median income for a family is $52,266. Males have a median income of $36,777 versus $26,873 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,506. 8.4% of the population and 6.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.6% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Attractions

Körner’s Folly (http://www.kornersfolly.org/index.htm) was built in 1878 by Jule Körner. It is now a minor tourist attraction, as a result of its very unusual design and architecture. It also housed the first public Little theatre in the US.
