Kannapolis, North Carolina

Kannapolis is a city in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, next to Concord and northeast of Charlotte. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 36,910. Kannapolis is also partially in Rowan County.

Kannapolis is home to the Funky Fox (Little Miss Concord), and is the birthplace of NASCAR drivers Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and funk musician George Clinton. It is also the home of the Kannapolis Intimidators, the Class A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.

Meaning of the word "Kannapolis"

Kannapolis is a combination of the Greek words "Canna" (Reeds or Looms) and "Polis" (City) which means "City of Looms". Originally the soon-to-be town was known by the spelling "Cannapolis" but J.W. Cannon thought it was an ugly word and changed it to "Kannapolis".

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 78.7 km² (30.4 mi²). 77.3 km² (29.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.78% water.



Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 36,910 people, 14,804 households, and 10,140 families residing in the city. The population density is 477.4/km² (1,236.5/mi²). There are 15,941 housing units at an average density of 206.2/km² (534.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 77.74% White, 16.45% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 3.43% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 6.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,804 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 13.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 26.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,532, and the median income for a family is $42,445. Males have a median income of $30,990 versus $23,277 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,539. 10.5% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.6% of those under the age of 18 and 10.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Transportation

Amtrak's Carolinian and Piedmont train connects Kannapolis with the cities of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Raleigh and Charlotte. The Amtrak station is situated at 125 South Main Street.
