Kananaskis is an improvement district situated about 80 km west of Calgary, Alberta in the foothills and front ranges of the Canadian Rockies.
There are many recreational activities in this area, including camping, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, scrambling, climbing (trad climbing (http://www.rmbooks.com/books/perbow.htm) alpine climbing (http://www.rmbooks.com/books/dousel.htm) sport climbing (http://www.rmbooks.com/books/marspt.htm)) and backpacking.
There is some development in the park, especially in one of the regions of Kananaskis country, Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. Development in Kananaskis includes several campgrounds, a golf course, some hotels, two ski resorts (one the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics and built specifically for it) a holiday ranch, two gas stations and a village near the Kananaskis Lakes.
The Eastern border of the park abuts the Stoney Indians reservation. Past the Western border is Canmore before reaching Banff National Park.
In 2002, Kananaskis played host to the G-8 Summit, which was the first one since the September 11 attacks. The area was locked down for the duration of the meeting, and protesters were kept well at arms distance in Calgary. The protests were peaceful and well organized, attended by groups such as the "Raging Grannies".
