The Norwegian rock band Kaizers Orchestra was formed in 2000. The two leading members, vocalist Jan Ove Ottesen and guitarist Geir Zahl, had known each other for years and started their first band (Blod, Snått & Juling) in 1991.
The current lineup is:
- Jan Ove Ottesen (vocals, guitar, piano, organ, oil drums)
- Geir Zahl (guitar, vocals, oil drums)
- Terje Vinterstø (guitar, backing vocals, percussion) †
- Rune Solheim (drums)
- Helge Risa (organ, piano)
- Jon Sjøen (acoustic bass) ‡
- Øyvind Storesund (acoustic bass) ‡
† Terje Vinterstø wasn't an original member, but joined later in 2000.
‡Øyvind Storesund replaced Jon Sjøen in 2003.
Their first album, Ompa Til Du Dør (Ompa 'Til You Die), was released on the underground label Broiler Farm in 2001. It was critically acclaimed and became a success, first in Norway, later in Denmark and the Netherlands. The second album, Evig Pint (Tortured Forever), was released in february 2003. The third album is scheduled for a September 2005 release in Norway and Europe.
Musically, Kaizers Orchestra is inspired by everything from Tom Waits's pessimistic lyrics and Eastern Europe-style Ompa-music to heavy rock. Their lyrics, written by Ottesen and Zahl, are all in Norwegian. They're regarded as one of Norway's best contemporary live bands, and are touring intensively.
