The Kainah (or Kainai, Kainaiwa) are a First Nation located in southern Alberta, Canada. They are part of the Blackfoot (Nitsitapii) nation. The nation has a current population of roughly 9,400 members.
Kainah translates directly to "Many Chiefs". The common English name for the tribe is "Blood", leading to the Kainah being known as the Blackfoot Blood tribe.
At the time treaties such as Treaty 7 were signed, the Kainah were situated on the Oldman, Belly, and St. Mary rivers west of Lethbridge, Alberta. The Kainah (Kainaiwa) reserve is currently the largest in Canada, and is located approximately 200 kilometres south of Calgary.
The Kainah are governed by an elected council of twelve, with one chief. The term of office is four years. Historical Chiefs of the Kainah are below:
- Chief Chris Shade (2000-2004)
- Chief Charles Weasel Head (2004-present)
