Julian Alps

The Julian Alps is part of the Alps that stretch from north-eastern Italy to Slovenia, where they rise to 2864 metres at Triglav. They are named after Julius Caesar and are part of the Southern Limestone Alps.

Its most important peaks are:

  • Triglav 2.864 m (9.396 feet)
  • Jof del Montasio/Montaž/Montasch; 2755 m (9.039 feet)
  • Škrlatica 2.740 m (8.990 feet)
  • Mangart 2.679 m (8.789 feet)
  • Jalovec 2.645 m (8.677 feet)
  • Razor 2.601 m (8.533 feet)
  • Kanin 2.582 m (8.471 feet)
  • Kanjavec 2.568 m (8.425 feet)
  • Prestreljenik 2.500 m (8.202 feet)
  • Tošc 2.275 m (7.464 feet)
  • Krn 2.244 m (7.362 feet)

Important passes of the Julians are:

  • Vršič, 1611 m (5826 feet), links the Sava valley and Soča valley. It is the highest mountain road pass in Slovenia.
  • Predil Pass (Villach/Beljak by Tarvisio/Trbiž and Bovec to Gorizia/Gorica), paved road 970 m (3.183 feet)
  • Birnbaumerwald (Ljubljana to Gorizia/Gorica), paved road 883 m (2.897 feet)
  • Saifnitz or Pontebba Pass/Tabeljski prelaz (Villach/Beljak by Tarvisio/Trbiž and Pontebba/Tablja to Udine/Videm), railway, paved road, Autobahn/autostrada/avtocesta 797 m (2.615 feet)
