Jose Carioca is Disney cartoon character drawn as an anthropomorphized parrot from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. José Carioca was created in 1942 for the movie Saludos Amigos as a friend of Donald Duck. A sequence followed in 1943 with The Three Caballeros.
He also appeared in Mickey Mouse Works and House of Mouse. Jose is quite popular in Brazil, appearing alongside Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in their Disney Comics. In Brazil he's known as Zé Carioca (Being "Zé" a familiar form for Portuguese name "José", as "Joe" is a familiar form for English name "Joseph"). In Brazil, he had it´s own comics.
The creation of a Brazilian animated character during the Second World War was part of an strategy called Good Neighborhood headed by the United States government to improve relations and gather support amongst its neighbour countries.
