John Welsh (born January 10, 1984 in Liverpool) is an English football player. He is a midfielder and is currently the captain of the England under-20 team.
Welsh has been playing for Liverpool F.C. since the age of 10. He has been making his way through the ranks for many years and has been training with the first team squad at Melwood since the middle of the 2001/02 season. Welsh's squad number is 32. He plays in the same midfield position as Steven Gerrard.
By September 2003, John Welsh has played only one game for the first team - he made his debute against Ipswich on April 12, 2002 in a League Cup fourth round tie at home, when he replaced Vladimir Smicer in the 83rd minute. Also, John Welsh has been amongst the substitutes for a number of European games.
His first game in Premiership was against Arsenal, when he substituted Salif Diao in the 82nd minute, but he couldn't help his team and they lost 1-2. Unfortunately for him, his first act was to be booked for a foul on Ray Parlour.
