Synopsis
A man wakes up entirely naked on an island only to discover that he has no memory of who he is. However, other than his past, Doe seems to have access to the sum total of all human knowledge: for example, he knows every trivial fact such as how many dimples are on a golfball or what the population of Uruguay is. He also has expert knowledge on everything from stock markets to computer science. Over the course of the show, Doe uses his unusual ability to try and find clues about his past while helping people in need whom he comes across. In the later episodes, it becomes clear that an international conspiracy known as the Phoenix Organization is monitoring John's activities, and may be responsible for his amnesia.
The Secret of John Doe
After the show was cancelled, one of the producers revealed the show's main plot secret in a TV Guide interview. Apparently, the Phoenix Organization is a semi-scientific, semi-occult group conducting research into near-death experiences. They believe that the total knowledge of the Universe is conferred onto you at the moment of death, so they killed John and brought him back to life in order to gain access to that knowledge.
