Jet-ski is the brand name of Kawasaki Heavy Industries personal water craft. The name, however, is often used as a generic term for personal watercraft (PWC) typically those propelled by water jets which rapidly expel water behind them in a jet, rather driven by a screw-shaped propeller, though the name can also refer to versions of PWCs known as "stand-ups."
Because of their relatively low cost and freedom they provide the driver, they are widely used recreationally on water bodies across the world. Whilst they can be used responsibly and with concern for the natural environment, they are also often used with a disregard for safety, without consideration of those experiencing their noise, and ignoring potential environmental impacts. As a result there are pressures in many parts of the world for regulation in the use and management of such watercraft.
Most modern jet skis include a deadman's switch to turn off the vessel or apply reverse thrust braking if the rider falls off.
Long Island's Great South Bay is a favorite for Jet Ski riders.
