Jesse M. Unruh

Jesse Marvin Unruh (1922 - 1987) -- also known as "Big Daddy" Unruh -- was a Democratic politician. He was born in Newton, Kansas on September 30, 1922. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
His political career began as a candidate for Presidential Elector for California in 1956; he was a member of California State Assembly, and Speaker of the California State Assembly, 1961-69; delegate to Democratic National Convention from California, 1960. He left the legislature to run for Governor of California against Ronald Reagan in 1970, then was a candidate for mayor of Los Angeles in 1973, and at last was elected California state treasurer, and served from 1975 to 1987. Unruh died in office of prostate cancer on August 4, 1987. His religion was described as Protestant, and he was a member of the American Legion. His burial location is unknown.
