Jedi Council
|
The Jedi High Council is a fictional institution from the Star Wars series of films.
During the Old Republic, the Jedi Council was the group of twelve wise and powerful Jedi Masters elected to guide the Jedi, as well as serve as an advisory body for the Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic (a sage governance). The council was made up of six lifetime members, five long-term members, and three limited-term members.
Some members were mentioned as being former Council members, such as Jocasta Nu (see Jedi Archives, but their exact times are unknown.

The Clone Wars
The Clone Wars (22-19 BBY) were a terrible time for the galaxy and the Jedi in particular, as several of their greatest were killed over the course of those three bloody years. Coleman Trebor was killed by Jango Fett during the Battle of Geonosis, and Eeth Koth perished when his gunship was shot down during withdrawal from that world. Depa Billaba fell to the dark side on Haruun Kal, and Oppo Rancisis was murdered on the planet Saleucami by the Dark Jedi Sora Bulq. Towards the end of the war, Even Piell and Adi Gallia were killed by the fearsome Separatist commander General Grievous.

Chancellor Palpatine appointed Anakin Skywalker as his representative on the Jedi Council during Revenge of the Sith. The council approved his appointment, but refused to grant Anakin the rank of Jedi Master.
The twelve members of this Jedi High Council proved to be the last of the Old Republic. Kit Fisto, Agen Kolar, Saesee Tiin, and Mace Windu were all struck down in battle with Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious. Anakin Skywalker fell to the dark side and became Darth Vader, then led an attack on the Jedi Temple that resulted in Shaak Ti and Pablo-Jill's death. Following the issue of the Emperor's Order 66, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Stass Allie, and Plo Koon were murdered by their own clone stormtrooper forces on various planets. Obi-Wan Kenobi went into hiding on Tatooine and was killed by Darth Vader nineteen years later. Four years after that, Yoda passed away on Dagobah at the age of 900.
In 28 ABY, Luke Skywalker re-established the Jedi Council as part of his new Jedi Order. Most notable difference between the format of the new council and that of the old is the fact that only half of the council is made up of Jedi, while the other half consists of politicians.
