Jay Peak

Jay Peak Resort is an American ski resort located outside the small village of Jay, Vermont in the Laurentian mountains. The resort is a 30 minute drive from the Quebec, Canada border, and Jay Peak accepts Canadian money at par to encourage Canadian visitors.
The ski trails were carved into the mountain in the 1950's and its first ski director was an Austrian-German Walter Foger who taught the hip-hop method of slalom racing. Hip-hop was an uplifting technique to transfer weight in the turn by means of a slight jump. It remained the fastest way to slalom until Olympic medal winner Jean-Claude Killy, of France, popularized the smooth tranision of weight to the downhill ski.
The summit is at an elevation 3861 feet (1,180 m), with a 2,153 foot (656 m) vertical rise from the base of the peak. Jay Peak enjoys the largest snowfall in the North East, with an average of 357 inches (9 m) of snowfall a year. Well known for its Off-piste skiing, Jay contains approximately 100 acres (0.4 km²) of Off-piste skiing areas. Jay Peak has designed 24 Off-piste areas called Glades, which have been trimmed of small vegetation to provide with enjoyable Off-piste skiing. Jay has 76 trails covering 260 acres (1 km²) of skiable terrain.
