General James Wilson graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1860. He served in the American Civil War on the Union side against the Confederate States of America, mainly as an engineer.
In 1864 he switched from engineering to the cavalry and served under Philip Sheridan in Virginia before becoming chief of cavalry for the Western Theatre. He served with the cavalry until leaving the army in 1870.
He returned in 1898 however, and served as a major general in the Spanish-American War, and also saw service in China during the time of the Boxer Rebellion in 1901.
Wilson died in 1925, with only three Civil War generals living longer.
