J. H. Prynne

J. H. Prynne (born 1936) is a British poet closely associated with the British Poetry Revival.

Prynne's early influences include Charles Olson and Basil Bunting. His first book, Force of Circumstance and Other Poems was published in 1962. His Poems (1982) collected all the work he wanted to keep in print. An expanded and updated version appeared in 1999, with another forthcoming in 2004.

Prynne was one of the key figures in the Cambridge group of Revival poets and was a major contributor to The English Intelligencer.

In addition to his poetry, Prynne has published a wide range of critical and academic prose and wrote a critical essay for New Songs from a Jade Terrace , an anthology of early Chinese love poetry which appeared in 1982.

Prynne is a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Until 2004, he taught English Literature as a Lecturer for Cambridge University and as Director of Studies in Caius College, as well as being Librarian of Caius College Library. From 2004, he has ceased teaching but continues in his role as Librarian.
