Jęgerkorpset, translated as the Ranger Corps or the Hunter Corps, is a Danish special forces unit. Jęgerkorpset is comprised of 70 to 80 highly trained soldiers with special expertise in counterterrorism, including demolitions, parachuting, and combat swimming. Its mission and structure is generally considered equivalent or similar to the U.S. Army's Army Rangers or the British SAS. Jęgerkorpset is based on Aalborg Air Base.
The selection course to becoming a Jęgersoldat (a member of Jęgerkorpset) is extremely difficult. For a trooper to be accepted into the course, he must complete a shortened Patruljekursus ("Patrol Course") of eight days in length instead of the original eight weeks. The course focuses primarily on navigation and orientation. If this course is passed with the grade "very satisfactory" (equal to a 4 on a 1-5 scale), the applicant can then proceed to the Patrol Course. This course lasts eight weeks, and only if it is completed with the grade of "very satisfactory" can the applicant be part of the Aspirant Kursus, or aspirant course. If this is completed, the applicant is now viewed as "one of the family," placed on a "tryout" period of 1½ years.
As a general rule, out of 100 applicants to the Patrol Course, only one or two become members of the Corps.
Members do not spend much time at Aalborg; they generally spend 200 to 250 days a year in training or on missions.
