The Song
The song is in some ways recycled from another song off the the Fragile (that song being La Mer). It starts off with a gamelan based intro for about 40 seconds. The intro is the same melody as the piano intro of La Mer. The main bass line of the song was also taken from La Mer. Lyrically, Trent basically laments over his failed attempts of self-preservation, as he is sucked into a void of depravity. The chorus being "tried to save myself, but myself keeps slipping away."
A music video was made for this song. It was directed by Walter Stern and Jeff Richter and released on 14 January, 2000.
"Into the Void" has been covered by Eric Gorfain, Skorbut & Kalte Farben and Wormhole.
There is also another song called Into the Void by Black Sabbath. When the original tracklist for The Fragile was released, some speculated that it could be a cover of the Sabbath song.
