Indiana University School of Medicine
|
The Indiana University School of Medicine is based at the Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Established in 1903, the school had an initial class of 25 students. For the 2003 - 2004 academic year, when the school observed its Centennial Celebration, it welcomed 280 first-year medical students. First- and second-year students attend classes at either the main Indianapolis campus (approximately half of the class) or one of eight regional centers at college campuses throughout the state. Third- and fourth-year students spend the last two years of medical school at the IUPUI campus, honing their clinical skills as well as doing their classroom and laboratory work.
Students train under faculty and staff to help patients at the Indiana University Hospital, James Whitcomb Riley Children's Hospital, Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Hospital and the Wishard Memorial Hospital, all on the IUPUI campus. The School also helps train interns and residents in various medical specialties.
