Index case

The index case of a disease outbreak is the first person to be infected with the disease and thus the source of the outbreak. Often scientists search for the index case to determine how the disease spread and if possible what reservoir holds the disease in between outbreaks.
The movie Outbreak dealt with a CDC agent who was charged with finding the index case of an Ebola outbreak.
