Imo State

Imo State in Nigeria came into existence in 1976 along with other new states created under the leadership of the late military ruler of Nigeria, Murtala Muhammad. It is located in the southeast region of Nigeria with Owerri as it capital and largest city.
Imo is a predominantly Igbo speaking state and constitutes the heart of Igboland. Further states emerged from the old Imo state; Abia and Ebonyi states. The current Governor of Imo state is Dr. Achike Udenwa. The state is rich in oil and was home to the oldest African King in modern times, HRH Eze Patrick Acholonu, Igwe X of Orlu a region in Imo State. Eze Acholonu who died in 2003 had been the King of his community since March of 1937 when he ascended the throne of the Ishiobiukwu Gedegwum. Today Orlu, together with Owerri city and Okigwe form the tripod metropolitan centres o Imo State.
