The diminutive Bell X-1 rocket research plane was the world's first aircraft to break the sound barrier and achieve supersonic flight on Oct. 14, 1947. Here General Chuck Yeager's Glamorous Glennis, accelerates toward Mach 1 on its epic flight. The aircraft's conical nose, modeled on the lines of a .50 caliber bullet, and the shock diamonds from its exhaust trail, can easily be seen.
