Hurricane, Utah

Hurricane is a city located in Washington County, Utah. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,250 and by 2003 had been estimated to increase to 9,465. Hurricane has seen tremendous population growth along with many other areas of southwest Utah since the 1970s and has blended into neighboring Saint George.
Hurricane is so named for its year-round gale-force winds that were first encountered by Mormon settlers in the early 20th century, although locals pronounce the name of the city "Her-A-Kin". Hurricane has a single high school, Hurricane High School. It is comprised of grades 9-12 and is attended by students from the surrounding communities of La Verkin, Toquerville, and Springdale, among others.

Education
Hurricane has one high school, Hurricane High School (encompassing grades 9-12), a middle school, Hurricane Middle School (encompassing grades 6-8), and two elementary schools, Hurricane Elementary School and Three Falls Elementary School. There is also a Hurricane-based center for nearby Dixie State College of Utah.
High School Sports
In 2002-2003, The Hurricane High School Men's Track team was crowned Utah Division 3A State Champions.
Geography
Hurricane is located at 37°10'27" North, 113°19'34" West (37.174182, -113.326235)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 81.7 km² (31.5 mi²). 80.6 km² (31.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.39% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,250 people, 2,762 households, and 2,201 families residing in the city. The population density is 102.4/km² (265.2/mi²). There are 3,375 housing units at an average density of 41.9/km² (108.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.89% White, 0.16% African American, 0.96% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.29% Pacific Islander, 1.16% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 2.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,762 households out of which 38.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.0% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.3% are non-families. 18.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.97 and the average family size is 3.38.
In the city the population is spread out with 32.8% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 21.6% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $32,865, and the median income for a family is $36,955. Males have a median income of $30,172 versus $19,588 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,353. 13.1% of the population and 10.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
