Hunter is a town located in Greene County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,721.

History
The town was formed in 1813.
Geography
The south town line and part of the east town line are the border of Ulster County, New York. The town is in the Catskill Mountains and the Catskill State Park.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 235.0 km² (90.7 mi²). 234.3 km² (90.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,721 people, 1,074 households, and 644 families residing in the town. The population density is 11.6/km² (30.1/mi²). There are 2,840 housing units at an average density of 12.1/km² (31.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.95% White, 0.59% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.84% from two or more races. 2.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,074 households out of which 26.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% are non-families. 34.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.88.
In the town the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 102.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $33,382, and the median income for a family is $42,200. Males have a median income of $35,532 versus $22,188 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,496. 19.5% of the population and 11.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.0% of those under the age of 18 and 16.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
