Hugh Doggett Scott Jr. (November 11, 1900 – July 21, 1994) was an American politician who served as a Republican U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania from 1959 to 1977. He also served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1941 to 1945 and again from 1947 to 1959. Scott served briefly as the Chairman of the Republican National Committee during the 1948 Presidentinal campaign. At the beginning of the 91st Congress (January 1969) he was elected Whip by his GOP colleagues to replace the defeated Senator Thomas Kuchel. Only months later he defeated Howard Baker in a fight for the post of Senate Minority Leader, a vacancy that arose upon the death of Senator Everett Dirksen. During the Watergate scandal, he was still serving as the Senate Minority Leader. As such, he was part of the delegation along with House Minority Leader John Rhodes and Senator Barry Goldwater which told President Richard Nixon he must resign for the good of their party and the country. Scott was a moderate Republican and did not occupy a safe seat. Scott was influential in current Senator Arlen Specter's decision to run on the Republican ticket for Philadelphia District Attorney, eventually leading to Specter's switch to the Republican Party.
