The school is set in 545 acres (2 km²) of woodland near two lakes, which allows it to offer environmental science courses. The school is well known for its arts, photography and video programs. A 212,000-ft² (19,700 m²) athletic center opened in 2002; a 715-seat glass-enclosed performing arts center and music pavilion opened in spring 2005. Hotchkiss' 9-hole golf course was created by famed designer Seth Raynor. Hotchkiss is currently embarking on a 30 million dollar renovation and construction upgrade to its student residences. As of the start of the 2004-2005 school year Hotchkiss boasted 555 students, more than 200 faculty and staff, and one of the largest high school endowments in the country - more than $320 million.
