Hope is a town located in Hamilton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 392.

The Town of Hope was formed in 1818. The town is in the southeast corner of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 107.8 km² (41.6 mi²). 105.5 km² (40.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.09% water.

The south border of the town is Fulton County, New York and the east border is Saratoga County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 392 people, 155 households, and 113 families residing in the town. The population density is 3.7/km² (9.6/mi²). There are 296 housing units at an average density of 2.8/km² (7.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.49% White, 0.26% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.26% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 155 households out of which 30.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% are non-families. 20.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the town the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 33.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,000, and the median income for a family is $32,000. Males have a median income of $25,000 versus $19,688 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,225. 12.4% of the population and 7.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.8% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Hope -- The hamlet of Hope, previously called Hope Center, is on Route 30 and the east bank of the Sacandaga River.
  • Hope Falls -- A hamlet east of Hope village on Hope Falls Road.
  • Sacandaga River -- A river that flows southward through the town.

Adjacent towns and areas

The Town of Benson is to the west, and the Town of Wells is to the north. The Towns of Day and Edinburg in Saratoga County are on the east border. The Northampton in Fulton County is the south border.
