Hoosick, New York

Hoosick is a town located in Rensselaer County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,759.

The Town of Hoosick is in the northeast corner of the county.

History

The town is one of the original towns of the county and was created as a town in 1788. The region was formerly the District of Hoosick (1772) and previously the Hoosick Patent (1688).

Among the notable natives of Hoosick is John Palmer (1785-1840), who seved two non-consecutive terms in the United States Congress.

Geography

The north town line is the boundary of Washington County, New York, and the east town line is the border of Vermont.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 163.6 km² (63.2 mi²). 163.2 km² (63.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.21% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,759 people, 2,620 households, and 1,823 families residing in the town. The population density is 41.4/km² (107.3/mi²). There are 2,892 housing units at an average density of 17.7/km² (45.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.96% White, 0.49% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,620 households out of which 32.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.8% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% are non-families. 25.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $41,304, and the median income for a family is $46,442. Males have a median income of $35,899 versus $24,211 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,614. 6.7% of the population and 5.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
