Hilton Head Island is a town located in Beaufort County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 33,862. Hilton Head Island is 45 miles north of Savannah, Georgia, and 95 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina. The island features 12 miles of beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean and is a popular vacation destination.
The island is served by Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport. Hilton Head Island is famous for its world class golf courses and each year hosts the PGA Heritage Classic Tournament, which is played on the Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines Plantation.
Though known mainly as a tourist destination, Hilton Head has developed a rapidly growing full-time population, made up mostly of affluent transplants from Ohio, New Jersey, and other northern states. It is also becoming the location of a large population of Hispanics.

Hilton Head Island is located at 32°10'44" North, 80°44'35" West (32.178828, -80.742947)Template:GR. Located just north of Savannah, Georgia, it is the second largest (after Long Island, New York) of the Barrier Islands on the Atlantic Ocean coastline.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 143.9 km² (55.5 mi²). 108.9 km² (42.1 mi²) of it is land and 34.9 km² (13.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 24.28% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 33,862 people, 14,408 households, and 9,898 families residing in the town. The population density is 310.8/km² (805.1/mi²). There are 24,647 housing units at an average density of 226.3/km² (586.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 85.33% White, 8.26% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 4.48% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 11.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 14,408 households out of which 20.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% are married couples living together, 6.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% are non-families. 23.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.68.
In the town the population is spread out with 17.3% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 24.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 100.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.0 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $60,438, and the median income for a family is $71,211. Males have a median income of $37,262 versus $30,271 for females. The per capita income for the town is $36,621. 7.3% of the population and 4.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.4% of those under the age of 18 and 2.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
