History and Character
Much of Highland Park’s residential housing was built between 1915 and 1935. The City has the largest number of Arts and Crafts Movement bungalows east of the Rockies and sections of the city are on the National Register of Historic Places.
Among the city's more famous sons is rock and roll pioneer, Bill Haley and flamboyant automotive industy rebel, John DeLorean - both born there in 1925.
The town was exceptionally green until the 1970s when Dutch elm disease caused many old trees to be cut down.
The city suffered from white flight after the 1967 Detroit 12th Street Riot. The loss of stability in the community and economic development, caused partly by crime, mismanagement, disinvestments and racism, contributed to the city becoming the most crime ridden place in the United States by the mid-1980s.
Devil's Night fires which were a problem in Detroit, also destroyed many homes and buildings in Highland Park.
